Technology is big business, both in the money used for development and research, as well as the money that technology brings in from the consumer. Technology in terms of computers, and the various forms of digital media are bringing people closer to the action and resulting in big dollar signs for so many.
However, in Hollywood, the introduction of digital media isn’t making everyone happy. It’s not that the world-famous actors and actresses don’t like the added exposure, because they do. It’s just that these find thespians have a hard time with the digital age for a variety of reasons. It’s issues that are coming to head much sooner than later, and the implications will be lasting.
One of the basic problems Hollywood has with it is it’s money making capabilities. While an actor always appreciates the extra cash for whatever they do, but extra money from digital media is not always probable or possible. When an actor agrees to star in a television sitcom they must sign a deal that pays them for the right to broadcast the first time, but it also promises them a check for royalties. These royalties are monies paid to actors when the show is shown on second and third runs and shown on to other television stations.
However, when it comes to what is shown on a network website, there is normally no extra money paid. It’s not considered a re-run by definition of the contract, and therefore they are not entitled to get paid. As more and more shows head the route of being shown online there is an increased risk of actors not getting paid the money they deserve.
Actors are looking to make a united front when it comes to the kind of money they should get paid for these online spots. Whether it be a royalty check, or built into that initial cost, it should be part something the actors hold strong for.
